FAQ
COLREG in short
What is COLREG?
COLREG is the International Regulations for Preventing Collisions at Sea, 1972, adopted by the IMO. It sets the rules of the road for every vessel: who gives way, which lights and shapes to show, and which sound signals to use.
How many COLREG rules are there?
There are 41 rules in six parts: Part A General (1–3), Part B Steering and sailing (4–19), Part C Lights and shapes (20–31), Part D Sound and light signals (32–37), Part E Exemptions (38) and Part F Verification of compliance (39–41), plus four annexes.
Is the COLREG practice test free?
Yes. Every quiz on this site is free and needs no sign-up. The COLREG 72 app adds the full question bank with an explanation, rule reference and diagram for every question, and works offline.
Who is this COLREG practice for?
Yachtmaster and skipper candidates, deck cadets, OOW and master exam candidates, and anyone standing a watch who wants to refresh lights, shapes, signals and give-way rules.
